The Postgraduate Department of Biochemistry

To provide quality education and training in biochemistry is the mandate of the Department of Biochemistry. The Department offers three programmes of study: PhD in Biochemistry, M.Sc. in Biochemistry, and M.Sc. in Bioelectronics and Instrumentation. It also offers opportunity for postdoctoral research.

Biochemistry deals with the chemical processes of life, which makes it a multidisciplinary subject with applications in all disciplines of life sciences including the medical sciences, plant/agricultural sciences, microbiology, cell and molecular biology, biotechnology, toxicology, environmental sciences, and upcoming disciplines: bio-nanotechnology, computational and systems biology. This Department of Biochemistry is recognized as one of the excellent places of biochemistry education and research, and attracts students from across the country and abroad. Over the years, students who pass out from this Department have taken up jobs of scientists in national research institutes (DRDO, CSIR, CCRUM), working as teachers in universities/colleges (DU, KU, JH and medical colleges), and as executives/consultants in private firms (Nature Pub Group, IPR Firms etc), and as application managers in MNCs like Waters. Besides, many have opted for positions abroad and working in reputed institutes/firms in USA, European countries, Gulf and elsewhere. Over 160 students of this department have qualified various national level tests (NET/GATE/ICMR/ICAR etc) over a period of time.

The Department is well equipped to carry out research work and to impart practical training in biochemistry. It is equipped with dedicated HPLC, Animal Tissue Culture Facility, and software for Molecular Modeling and Drug Design, besides basic facilities required for biochemical research. Chronic inflammatory diseases, immunomoduation, new drug development, dietary mutagens, isolation and characterization of soil bacteria antagonistic to plant pathogens, bio-control, and proteins and enzymes are the areas of interest to the Department. Signal transduction, stem cell research, regeneration, functional proteomics and biosensors are other areas, which are being developed by the Department. The Department has been receiving grant-in-aid from the funding agencies (UGC, DBT, DST, ICMR, CSIR, and CCRUM) to support these activities; over a period of last five years, the department has received a grant of Rs. 1.73 Crore from various sources. The department has completed an ICMR coordinated Task Force Study to estimate serum vitamin A in children below six years in Assam and Rajasthan. The study was fully funded by the UNICEF.

The department believes in disseminating knowledge at various levels. Besides the classroom teaching to its students, the Department organizes seminars and brain-storming sessions and also provides hands-on training to the students and staff of other institutes including the staff from the national laboratories. All teachers in the Department are PhD holders and recognized in their areas; one of the teachers has been awarded the Commonwealth Fellowship Award. Teachers publish papers in high impact factor peer review journals; the average impact factor of 10 best papers in last few years is 3.65. About 35 students are registered for PhD in the department. The department also has inter-institutional collaborations. Syllabus is updated regularly to include emerging areas. Recently a paper on Industrial Biochemistry has been added to the syllabus to enable the students to find job in industry. Students are encouraged for creative learning. Class rooms are equipped with modern teaching aids such as the LCD, interactive board and have 24 hr power backup and air conditioners to provide an ambient environment. The department is committed to quality education and research in biochemistry.
