DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICS

Development of Mucosal Drug Delivery System:
The department has been pursuing research in this area for many years. Several papers have been published in International and national journals. Recently one paper was presented at International Symposium on controlled Release of Bio-active materials at Boston (USA). Further the department has on going major research schemes from UGC and AICTE in this area. Two products developed by the Deptt. have undergone initial clinical trials in Majeedia Hospital. With this initial background and research potential in this area, collaborative efforts will be made with suitable Pharmaceutical companies from the point of view of commercial exploitation of some pharmaceutical products.

Transdermal & Iontophoretic Drug Delivery Systems: This area has also received good attention and success in the last ten years. The future efforts will be to discover, various physical and chemical methods of transdermal penetration enhancement. This research area is likely to be important and will remain a basic issue for the development of Transdermal Drug Delivery Systems which have a bright future in next decade.

Development of HI-Tech Pharm Tech & Pilot Plant Laboratory:
The Department in next ten years should be in a position to develop a Hi-Tech Pharmaceutical Technology Research and Pilot Plant laboratory. This will be achieved by obtaining funds from various funding agencies like UGC, CSIR etc. Every Senior teacher will be asked to develop an area of research and make all efforts in this direction. At present the Deptt. has already sought about 20 lacs from AICTE and Ranbaxy Research Lab. for various equipments etc. This is a beginning in this direction.

After obtaining better infrastructural facilities, the Deptt. can take up more Industry sponsored projects, and collaborate more effectively to initiate and sustain contemporary, and applicative research areas. This will be very pertinent in view of post-GATT scenario, when Pharma Industry would need to have such collaborations and Interactions for sharing the manpower and the Intellectual Property Rights with academic institutions.
